Journey to Gonka’s Chinatown

Exploring Jakarta: A Grade 7 Educational Excursion

Our Grade 7 students recently embarked on a fascinating journey through Jakarta, exploring areas rich in culture and history, as well as modern hubs of activity. The excursion began in Pancoran/Glodok, the city’s historic Chinatown, where students gained a unique insight into traditional practices by visiting a local Toko Obat Cina (Chinese herbal medicine shop). This provided a tangible link to Indonesia’s diverse cultural heritage, allowing students to observe and learn about traditional healing methods and the architecture of the old city. The day continued with a blend of the past and present, offering an invaluable opportunity for interdisciplinary learning that connected their history, social studies, and even science lessons to the vibrant reality of Jakarta.

Moving on to the bustling Blok M area, the students experienced a different facet of city life. A visit to Gramedia Melawai offered a chance to browse and engage with the world of literature and modern media, linking back to their literacy and research skills. The final stop, Uma Oma, provided a creative and inspiring setting, perhaps showcasing local art, crafts, or food, giving students a broader perspective on contemporary Indonesian culture and community spaces. This annual excursion is designed to move learning beyond the classroom, fostering curiosity, observation skills, and a deeper appreciation for the dynamic tapestry of Jakarta.
